My husband and I just adore them. I mean, we can not pet them, or hold them like you would on a tree frog, but it's still the same. They're actually not too hard to take care of, but you would need to read a ton of sites before you chose the frog you'd want.
The day we first got Pesto was kind of spontaneous, as we were only looking, but I fell in love with him when we went to Petco. Sure, I spent roughly $150-$190 that day, but it was worth it. We had to get the tank (10g), substrate, moss, water dish, plants (though, he didn't have any for a few weeks...) and a bark of course for him to hide out in!
We learned down the road on talkto.thefrog.org that the moss we *were* using was kind of bad for them. They could swallow it and probably die (well, not really..) from choking on it. So we bought different moss that was a little softer, but they told us the same thing.
Here are a few pictures of when he was -maybe- 3months old - we believe he was around that age when we got Pesto.
As you can probably see in the above picture, we had the old moss that everyone disagreed with. However, he did like the substrate we bought. He used to borrow all the time... then he's older, and he rarely borrows :(
Being new parents to our frogs, here was the setup for a while - before we got a bit creative!
We then bought our second one, Ragu. We did a fatal mistake of quarantine and got yelled at over at the frog forum. Oops! We have learned now with our newest addition however.
Here's Pesto and Ragu a few months ago on the quarantine we did...
Months go by, and we get a bit more creative with the tank. From the Forest Bed substrate to the EcoEarth and Coco fiber - we have a pretty good setup. Actually, the Coco fiber hasn't come into play yet..... In a week it will though!
I actually like the setup we had going for a while. The moss that was in there was pretty good - but as always, they said any type of loose moss was not good for the frogs (or any frogs for that matter), and we had to get rid of it. The green loose moss is what we got rid of - the other big chunky moss in the 'live' moss that our frogs decided to kill. They were growing for a bit, but both Pesto and Ragu LOVE to lay or burrow under them. The plant in there is Pothos - we had only put one in there at the time, to see if our guys would even like it. (And they do!) Later on we had added more pothos (pictures later).
Here's another picture of Ragu peaking out and about..
On May 14th, I bought a 2-3 week old Tomato Frog. We did do the quarantine correctly this time. My husband bought a 15g tank to put Pesto and Ragu in, and the little guy in our 10g tank. I couldn't resist to not buy him - it was either him OR a Cuban Tree frog... I wanted the TF though as well.. but I couldn't afford both :(
We named our little guy Ketchup:
Don't worry, he only stayed in the cup for maybe 30 mins while we fixed his new home.
The top tank has Pesto and Ragu and the bottom has Ketchup. Not a good setup, but where we had currently lived, that's all we could do. (I'm moving our belongings into the new apartment, so i'll have better pictures up of the new setup for them !)
Misc. pictures:
Ketchup:
Pesto:
Ragu:
Both of them together:
And the most awesome-ness pictures of all time!
Ragu thinks he's (or she) a Tree Frog! Ha.
The good thing I know is that Pesto is male. He's been croaking (his frog song!) the past few weeks. It's one of those things a parent loves to hear !
The best thing I can really give for anyone who's looking at frogs and to be sure you know what you're doing. They may not be as expensive as a fish/dog/cat etc, but they are need in a lot of care people do take for granted. These guys are my pride and joy, and even though I do not have children yet, I do treat them as my children. They're a great pet to watch at night, as they're nocturnal.
Well, I hope you guys enjoy. I know for a fact I'll have brand new pictures once I get internet back from moving. Any questions ask away - I can try my best to answer before I have no internet today. I hope you guys enjoyed :)
